Golf simulator planning

How to choose a golf simulator impact screen.

The best screen is a safe, correctly tensioned surface that suits ball speed, image expectations, room width and replacement plans.

The decision checklist

DecisionWhat to check
Safety marginFollow the screen and enclosure supplier’s required side, top and rear clearances.
Layer constructionMore layers can improve noise, durability and image quality but increase cost.
TensionToo loose reduces image quality; too tight can increase bounce-back risk.
Image areaSet aspect ratio and finished visible dimensions before selecting the projector.
MaintenancePlan for wear, cleaning and eventual replacement in the total ownership cost.

Questions to ask a supplier

  • What exact dimensions and clearances are required?
  • What is included, excluded and consumable?
  • Which launch monitors and room layouts have been tested?
  • What warranty and support are provided?
  • What must be replaced or renewed over five years?

What we would avoid

  • Fixing the screen directly against a hard wall
  • Buying before measuring the enclosure opening
  • Treating a display fabric as an impact screen
  • Ignoring side and ceiling protection

Complete the room plan

Do not buy this component in isolation. Check how it interacts with the room, launch monitor, screen geometry, software and complete budget.

Fit the component to the room plan

SimSpace Golf sells impact screens on their own, from the Elite to the Platinum (indicative guide amounts; confirm the current price with the retailer). Match the screen size to your enclosure opening and projector image.

Screen, enclosure and projector have to agree

Choose the finished image width and height from the room's safe hitting zone, then choose an aspect ratio that the projector can fill from its available mounting position. The fabric's nominal size may exceed the visible image once it is attached to the enclosure. Ask for the finished viewable dimensions and the supplier's recommended fixing method, not only the roll size.

Leave the clearances required by the screen and enclosure supplier behind and around the fabric. Check what a mishit can strike beside or above it. Screen tension affects both image flatness and rebound, so follow the supplier's installation instructions rather than pulling the material as tight as possible. A net-only practice area and a projected impact screen solve different jobs.

Compare the ongoing costs

Ask whether the quoted package includes side protection, frame padding, fixings, projector mount and a replacement screen. An impact screen is a wear item: inspect it regularly and budget for replacement according to use and the supplier's guidance. If the room is shared with other purposes, also assess how the enclosure can be taken down or stored without damaging the screen.

Start with the room dimensions, then use the projector guide and enclosure guide to match the parts.
