Assessment methodology

How we review golf technology.

Golf Gear Lab reviews and buying guides are built around real buying decisions: accuracy, ease of use, value, reliability and whether a product genuinely suits the golfer we recommend it for.

Golf Gear Lab was founded by an engineer with a background in measurement technology, and a lifelong golfer — read the full story.

How our evidence-led assessments work

What our reviews are designed to answer

Who is it best for?

Every review explains the golfer, budget and use case the product suits best.

What are the trade-offs?

We highlight the compromises: price, subscription costs, room fit, learning curve or missing features.

What should you compare?

Each recommendation points to the most relevant alternatives so buyers can make a confident final choice.

How we use assessment evidence

Manufacturer documentation supports published features, compatibility and installation requirements. It does not independently establish accuracy, ease of use or long-term reliability.

Independent published reviews can help identify practical trade-offs. We link the sources used on the product page and distinguish their findings from our own judgement.

Retailer information supports the exact model, variant and purchasing route. Affiliate eligibility and stock status never provide evidence for a score.

When we report our own hands-on testing, the page should identify the model, setup, date and observations. Where our own hands-on testing is available, we identify it clearly alongside the wider evidence base.

Independent testing and our assessment

A GGL Score is an editorial assessment, not an average of customer reviews or a measured accuracy result. Manufacturer specifications are identified as such. Where independent evidence is limited, our assessment should make that limitation clear. Any first-hand testing performed by Golf Gear Lab must be identified separately with its method and supporting evidence.
