Why this score: 90/100
Research-based editorial assessment of published specifications, usability, ownership costs and value. This model has not been independently tested by Golf Gear Lab.
A strong side-on choice for a dedicated indoor bay, with club data and speed training; software renewals and mixed-handed use need planning.
What it is
The ST MAX is SkyTrak’s current launch monitor and the successor to the SkyTrak+, which SkyTrak no longer lists as a current model. SkyTrak describes the tracking as dual Doppler radar plus photometric cameras. The unit sits to the side of the ball rather than behind it, which is why SkyTrak units suit rooms without much depth.
Independent coverage reports that the ST MAX uses the same tracking system and the same data set as the SkyTrak+. The differences are a speed-training module (SkyTrak credits GOLFTEC), dual USB ports for charging and data at the same time, a faster processor and a charcoal finish.
What hands-on reviews reveal
PlayBetter’s hands-on reviewer described ST MAX as a familiar SkyTrak experience with slightly quicker feedback, useful simultaneous charging and wired connection, and structured speed training as the main addition. These refinements may appeal particularly in a permanent practice bay. The report comes from a retailer and does not establish a quantified accuracy improvement, so existing owners should weigh the features against the net upgrade cost.

Refinement rather than a wholly new routine
PlayBetter’s Marc Sheforgen described hands-on time with ST MAX and found setup familiar from SkyTrak+. He reported slightly quicker shot display, while still noticing a delay rather than instantaneous feedback.
Our interpretation: the response change may improve the rhythm of practice, but this report does not demonstrate a quantified accuracy improvement.

Features that matter in a permanent bay
The same review valued simultaneous wired data and charging through the dual ports and treated structured speed training as the main addition.
Our interpretation: these features matter most if they solve a recurring problem in your routine. Existing owners should weigh them against the net upgrade cost.

Key specifications
| Tracking | Dual Doppler radar + photometric cameras (SkyTrak) |
|---|---|
| Placement | Beside the ball (side-on). Must be moved to switch between right- and left-handed golfers. |
| Data (as listed by retailers) | 15 parameters: club speed, smash factor, club path, face angle, face-to-path, face-to-target, carry, total distance, ball speed, back spin, side spin, descent angle, side angle, launch angle and shot shape |
| Indoor / outdoor | Rated for both |
| Size and weight | About 7 × 8 × 2.75 in (18 × 20 × 7 cm), about 3 lb (1.4 kg) |
| Connectivity | Dual-band Wi-Fi; dual USB ports |
| Software included | SkyTrak states one year of Foresight course-play membership is included. Older coverage lists third-party compatibility; confirm current new-buyer eligibility and the required membership directly with SkyTrak before purchasing for GSPro or E6. |
Space you need
Published guidance for a comfortable hitting area is about 10 ft wide × 10 ft deep × 9 ft high (3.0 × 3.0 × 2.7 m). That covers the swing and the unit beside the ball; a projected simulator room also needs space for the screen or enclosure in front. Because the unit sits side-on, it suits shorter garages and spare rooms better than radar units that sit behind the golfer.
Who it may suit, and who should look elsewhere
Worth a look if
You want a permanent indoor setup, all the regular users swing from the same side, and you value a mature course-play ecosystem.
Look elsewhere if
Left- and right-handed golfers share the room, you mainly practise outdoors, or you want the lowest-cost camera option. Compare the Square Golf first on price.
Our assessment
GGL Score 90/100. A strong side-on choice for a dedicated indoor bay, with club data and speed training; software renewals and mixed-handed use need planning. This assessment uses published evidence and does not imply hands-on testing.
Before ordering
- Confirm which membership tier you need for the software you plan to use, and its renewal cost after the first year.
- Check your room width allows the unit beside the ball for every golfer who will use it.
- Compare the complete room cost (screen, mat, projector, PC) with an alternative such as the Square Golf or Garmin R50.
